Intermittent power loss is one of the most frustrating things in Scalextric. Your car was flying around the track, then suddenly it stutters, slows, or stops completely — and it seems totally random. The good news is that it's almost always fixable, and usually caused by one of a small handful of things.
The braids — those thin copper or phosphor bronze strips that hang under the guide blade and make contact with the track rails — are the most common culprit. Over time they get clogged with dust, track grime, and oxidation, which breaks the electrical connection.
Fix: Remove the car and flip it over. Look at the braids — are they shiny or dull and grey? Clean them with a cotton bud and a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol (IPA). If they're bent, flattened, or broken, replace them entirely. Replacement braids are cheap and widely available. Make sure they sit flat against the rail with light, even pressure.
Even if your braids are perfect, dirty rails will cause exactly the same symptoms. The copper rails on Scalextric track pick up grease, rubber dust, and oxidation surprisingly quickly — especially if the track is stored or used in a dusty environment.
Fix: Use a track cleaning car if you have one, or wipe the rails down manually with a lint-free cloth and IPA. Don't use anything abrasive — you want to clean the rail surface, not scratch it. Pay extra attention to track joints, as grime builds up in the gaps.
Scalextric track sections click together with a plastic tab, but the electrical connection between sections can work loose over time — especially on a layout that gets assembled and disassembled regularly. A poor connection between two sections will cause power to drop out exactly at that point on the track.
Fix: Push all track joints together firmly. If a joint keeps popping apart, a small piece of masking tape on the underside can hold it together while racing. On permanent layouts, some people use a small dab of electrical contact spray on the metal connectors.
If the braids and track are both clean and the problem persists, the issue may be inside the motor. The carbon motor brushes wear down over thousands of laps and can start to lose contact with the commutator. You might hear a slight stuttering sound as the car slows.
Fix: Open the car body and inspect the motor. On most Scalextric cars this involves removing a couple of small screws. Look at the brushes — if they're very short or broken, replace the motor (it's often easier and cheaper than sourcing individual brushes for older motors). New motors from Scalextric or aftermarket suppliers are inexpensive.
A degrading or underpowered power supply can cause seemingly random cut-outs, especially if you're running two cars simultaneously. The standard Scalextric Sport power supply puts out 15V but can struggle with longer tracks or multiple cars drawing power at the same time.
Fix: Test the car on a very short, simple loop connected directly to the power pack. If it runs fine there but not on the full layout, your power supply may be the issue. Consider adding a second power connection point at the opposite end of the track, or upgrading to a higher-amperage supply.
